I am starting a new process to make MY photography business more personal. I'm not exactly talking about laying on the couch in sweat pants binge watching Grey's Anatomy/Station 19 and complaining about late night diaper changes, disagreements with friends and family, or why you are just so much smarter than the rest of the world. (That being said, I am completely on board with that any time. Seriously.)

I want my relationship with my clients to be personal in the sense that they feel they are talking to family. I want us to be comfortable talking about YOU. I want to be there to document ALL of the big moments: engagement, pregnancies, births, babies, cake smashing first birthdays, and all of the other milestones.

Seeing as my business is called Family Focused Photography, my job is to literally focus on families... (Get it???) When it comes to families, there tend to be a lot of personalities that all have to mesh with one person: the photographer. Let's use my family as an example: My husband, my older daughters, my son, my youngest daughter, and myself.

My husband is incredibly handsome but can tend to be awkward when it comes to having his photo taken. Plain and simple, he isn't overly comfortable in front of a camera. My daughters are absolutely FABULOUS and love being photographed, but they can be incredibly shy. My son is stubborn and bullheaded but has the most amazing smile when he does something that he thinks is HIS idea. Ellie is almost two and can go from mean-mugging to smiling like a princess in a flash. I, like my husband, am awkward. I was born to be behind the camera. So, our ideal photographer is someone hands-on who is willing to help man-handle my husband and me into the right positions/angles to show our best features. They are friendly and patient to get my daughters to open up. They have to be energetic and enthusiastic to be able to get on my youngest-two's levels and be their PARTNER rather than their boss. They have to be able to handle the unexpected.

I don't mean to toot my own horn, but this is exactly how I'd think my previous clients would describe me.

  • I am hands-on in the sense that I am willing to help you if you need adjustments. I understand that not everyone is a professional model. Not everyone is naturally comfortable in front of a camera, but everyone deserves beautiful family photos.
  • I have four kids, so naturally, I am friendly and patient. I will work with you. I bring props and toys to work with small children. I have gotten some very stubborn little ones to smile and laugh when they have only wanted to snuggle with their parents at the very beginning.
  • I am energetic and enthusiastic- If you aren't smiling and laughing and into it, I will FIND a way to make it more comfortable. As long as you are laughing, I don't care if you are laughing AT me or WITH me.
  • I will work with you and DEMONSTRATE how to get stunning images rather than just TELL you what to do.
  • I am WARM and nurturing. I love kids, babies, and families. I am available to talk, listen, and tackle your photography-related anxieties. I am more than willing to work with you on emotional and financial concerns regarding your photography sessions.

I do not have what it takes to shoot fashion, boudoir, pets... I have tried food photography but I always get WAY too excited about delicious foods and start eating before taking photos... BUT being a family photographer is just what I was made for. I thoroughly believe that other than being a mother to four BEAUTIFUL kids, this is what God called for me to do.

My sessions are generally an hour long. An hour session can FLY by or feel like forever depending on the photographer. You want a photographer who will make your family feel at ease because your comfort will show in the final edited images. Meeting beforehand allows us to get to know each other.

We have a lot to discuss! What is your style? What images are you HOPING to capture? Do you have kids? What is your favorite color? Do you prefer coffee or tea? Where do you plan to put these images? What is a random fun fact about yourself? Do you have a pet? Does your home décor have a theme? Do you need style tips? What was your favorite class in high school? What is your vibe? If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only bring three items with you, what would they be? Need suggestions on clothing stores to get affordable stylish outfits for the whole family? What is your favorite snack? Do you like B&W photos or color? Sepia? Please, not sepia... (kidding! If you like sepia, PLEASE tell me and I will add a few to your collection!) SEE?! The list never ends! So, let's make things easier and just chat face to face, screen to screen, whatever. Let's meet at a coffee shop, zoom call, or park and let our kids play while we visit! Let me buy you a cup of coffee (or tea) and we can see if we are a good fit!
